We are always interested in hearing more about the individuals in food banking across Canada! This month, our spotlight is on Sandra Cascaden from St. Joseph’s Food Bank in Mission, B.C.
What is your role in food banking?
I am the Manager, facilitating operations from shipping to receiving, locating food donations, volunteers, grant applications, fundraising, community connections, plus much more, all working toward serving our clients on distribution days.
Describe a typical day in one word.
Challenging.
What was your inspiration to get involved in food banking?
Boredom drove me to it, and then I knew it was my purpose.
What is your greatest achievement in your current role?
Receiving the Paul Harris award from the Rotary Club for my works in the community.
What is your greatest challenge in your current role?
Our present premises is not large enough to handle and store the increase of donated product coming in, due to the increase of clients. Having to reorganize continuously, and transporting to other facilities to help us store fridge and freezer foods is very challenging.
If you could have one wish granted that would address hunger in Canada what would it be?
That the government addresses employment opportunities and minimum wage, so that people can meet their basic needs.
Which talent would you most like to have?
Communication—listening.
If you could tell your younger self advice, what would it be?
Think for yourself, follow your dreams, you’re worth it!
Who are your heroes? Fictional or real life.
My mom—she is strong and independent.
What is your idea of happiness?
Finding peace with my past, loving myself and helping others.
What is your motto?
I can choose to be happy today—live and let live.
Something quirky about you that others may not expect or know?
My favourite show is “Little House on the Prairie.”
Your theme song?
“Independent Women” by Destiny’s Child.
