We are always interested in hearing more about the individuals in food banking across Canada! This month, our spotlight is on Sarah Tremblay, the Director of Operations for Food Banks of Quebec.
What is your role in food banking?
I have been at Food Banks of Quebec for three years, but I have recently become the new Director of Operations for the network. I was previously the Director of the Supermarket recovery program. In addition of this program, in my new role I manage logistics and purchasing of foodstuff.
What are your pronouns?
She/Her
Describe a typical day in one word.
DYNAMIC
What was your inspiration to get involved in food banking?
Feeling that my work is necessary and has concrete repercussions. I help transit millions of kilograms, thousands of pallets of food every year. I might never see them, but they end up feeding those who need it the most and that’s what’s important.
What is your greatest achievement in your current role?
I’ve only been in this new position for a few months, but my biggest accomplishment is my team. The hiring of my Coordinator Kevin who is a great asset for FBQ.
What is your greatest challenge in your current role?
The increase in demand is the biggest challenge. Even if we are developing new sources of foodstuff, it isn’t enough to feed those who urgently need it. Staying positive and hopeful is probably the biggest challenge in this regard.
If you could have one wish granted that would address hunger in Canada what would it be?
Affordable housing for all
Which talent would you most like to have?
Not needing sleep and being able to enjoy 24 hours of each day
If you could tell your younger self advice, what would it be?
Stop focusing on getting the best grades at school and focus on curiosity, learning and social involvement. This is what will stay with you the most.
Who are your heroes? Fictionnel or real life
I don’t really have a hero. I am a realistic person. But I find people who are perseverant and resilient very impressive.
What is your idea of happiness?
For me happiness is in experiences. The people we meet and the adventures we experience. I don’t value material goods but rather shared moments and discoveries.
What is your motto?
If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary.
Something quirky about you that others may not expect or know?
I hate coffee.
Your theme song?
L’Amérique pleure. (Les Cowboys Fringants)
