Food Banker Spotlight – Stephen Wallick of Niqinik Nuatsivik Nunavut Food Bank

We are always interested in hearing more about the individuals in food banking across Canada! This month, our spotlight is on Stephen Wallick of Niqinik Nuatsivik Nunavut Food Bank in Iqaluit, Nunavut.

What is your role in food banking?

  • Vice Chair on the Board – Sept 2017 to Present
  • Past Chair – Aug 2013 to Sept 2015
  • Volunteer – Sept. 2010 to Present

Describe a typical day in one word. 
Rewarding.

What was your inspiration to get involved in food banking?
Wanted to give back to the Community.

What is your greatest achievement in your current role?
Supporting the Board Chair’s new program changes. Helping with organization and planning.

What is your greatest challenge in your current role?
Fund Raising.

If you could have one wish granted that would address hunger in Canada what would it be?
Establishing a sustainable emergency/supplemental food delivery program for anyone in need.

Which talent would you most like to have?
To speak Inuktitut.

If you could tell your younger self advice, what would it be?
Hunger insecurity can happen to anyone. Never give up trying to help reduce hunger.

Who are your heroes?  Fictional or real life
Those who sacrifice themselves for others, from as little as giving your time and talents to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

What is your idea of happiness?
Seeing people’s lives changed for the better.

What is your motto?
Consider others more important than myself.

Something quirky about you that others may not expect or know?
I like to jump out of airplanes (with a parachute, lol).
